News & Notes

The first LIT UP! of 2015 was a great success, with 28 people showing up to hear former PFLer Julia Hirsch, Kathy Porter, and our own Maddie Margarita read from and discuss their work. Many thanks as always to Maddie for making the event go and grow.

LIT UP! North may launch in February. We’re looking at International Coffee in Brea as a possible venue. Stay tuned or further developments.

The first LIT UP! of 2015 will take place on Tuesday, 20 January, at 7:00 p.m. at Kean Coffee in Tustin. The Facebook event is up, and the flyers are here (1-up and 2-up). Watch for the event posting following closely on this post’s tail.

Larry Porricelli, President of the Southern California Writer’s Association, has made a generous offer: any PFL member can attend this Saturday’s SCWA meeting as his guest. Watch for meeting details in the event post following shortly. Steve will be at the door, so don’t try sneaking in if you haven’t been to a meeting since Steve arrived.

4 DECEMBER MEETING NOTES

The final PFL meeting of 2014 went off with a bang, with thirteen people attending: Burt (read four chapters of Dead Listing), Casey (read a chapter from The Boy Who Couldn’t Fly), Glenda, Jo, JoAnne, Kari, Lance, Maddie, Marcia, Marianna, Richard, Shari and Steve J. (read four reworked chapters from The Lust Gambit).

News & Notes

The annual holiday party will take place at Marianna’s house in Irvine at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, 11 December. The food list circulated during the meeting.

Maddie announced that we’re still looking for authors to read at the January LIT UP! If you’re interested, contact her to submit your selection.

Richard and Marsha will be abandoning to Golden State early next year for a fortified cabin deep in the piney woods of Arkansas. They think they can get away from PFL. Little do they know…

The special Author Showcase edition of LIT UP! drew 18 people to Kean Coffee to hear John Vorhaus, a long-time TV comedy writer (Married…With Children, Head of the Class), author, teacher, poker expert and consultant to TV producers worldwide. Thanks to Maddie for staging yet another successful event.

The annual holiday party was spoken of, and is rumored to be slated for 11 December. More details can be had at the next meeting.

Bouchercon — one of the major mystery-related writers’ conferences in the U.S. — will take place in Long Beach on 13-16 November. Look for the following event post.

A special Author Showcase edition of LIT UP! will happen on 11 November at Kean Coffee in Tustin. It will feature John Vorhaus, a long-time TV comedy writer (Married…With Children, Head of the Class), author, teacher, poker expert and consultant to TV producers worldwide. He’ll read from Texas Twist, the latest installment of his Radar Hoverlander con-man series, talk about his experiences in the comedy business, and discuss some of the key points of The Comic Toolbox, his how-to book for writing good comedy even if you’re not naturally funny. The Facebook event page is up, and flyers are available here (1-up and 2-up). If you have a way to get the flyers into any college English or literature departments, please do; Vorhaus should appeal to a university audience as well as our LIT UP! regulars.

If you don’t want to come to the meeting, UCI’s School of Humanities is hosting surf-noir author and screenwriter Kem Nunn on 13 November at 6:00 p.m. on campus. Look for the separate event post for details.

A 15-member book club in Van Nuys read Burt’s Jericho’s Walls, and Burt was the guest of honor during their discussion last week.

Glenda and Steve J. attended the La Jolla Writer’s Conference last weekend (24-26 October). They discussed the highlights with the group.

The 21 October LIT UP! was a success, drawing seventeen attendees (only two of whom were PFLers) to hear Heather Freidman Rivera, Frank Pray and Maria Alexander read their works. Maddie once again ably emceed the event.
